I just got back from ELA training at Lindley this morning. I was asked how my session was. I explained that we had a session about Common Core and then we got to listen to Carmen Deedy. The person asked, “What did she talk about?”
I said, “Well, she was talking about getting ideas for writing and how authors get ideas for writing and the process that they go through to get a story written.”
The person replied, “Well, is that a good way to spend an instructional planning day?”
My mind immediately flashed back to the video clip that was shown at the beginning of the Common Core session by Lucy Calkins. I was trying to find it on the web site because I now feel it is important that everyone hear Corey Booker’s story. Why did that person have to “poo-poo” on my experience? I enjoyed the morning and I enjoyed these video clips. They weren’t what I was looking for, but it gives us ALL food to think about. If all we are going to do is “poo-poo” on the idea of something new, or doing something in a different way, won’t we just end up in the same place, failing to teach ALL of our students? Thanks, Diana!
